Three days is enough to get a good taste of Fethiye without rushing. You can see the old town and the rock tombs, spend time on one of the famous beaches, visit an abandoned village, take a boat on the bay and still leave time to eat well. This plan is written for first-time visitors with no car, using dolmuş minibuses and organised trips where they make life easier. Swap days around if the weather changes.

Before you start

  • Where to stay: Fethiye centre is best if you like walking to restaurants and the harbour. Çalış is quieter and beside the sea. Ölüdeniz is more resort-like. All three are connected by minibus.
  • Season: This plan works from April to October. In July and August, start earlier and rest in the middle of the day.
  • Transport: Minibuses (dolmuş) run frequently in season. Ask the driver or your hotel about the current fare. For Saklıkent and Tlos a tour or rental car is more practical.
  • Prices and hours: Always check them locally, because they change.

Day 1: Old Fethiye and the harbour

Start the first day gently, to adjust to the heat and learn your way around.

  • Morning: Walk up to the Tomb of Amyntas, which is best before the sun is high. Look at the Lycian sarcophagi in the town and the remains of the theatre.
  • Lunch: Eat in Paspatur, the old bazaar quarter, or at a small local restaurant near the harbour.
  • Afternoon: Visit the Fethiye Museum if you like archaeology, then stroll along the harbour. If it is a Tuesday, spend time at the market instead. See our market guide.
  • Evening: Have dinner by the water and watch the light change over the bay. Ask the waiter for the fish price per kilo first.

Day 2: Kayaköy and Ölüdeniz

A beach day with a little history to start.

  • Morning: Take a minibus or taxi to Kayaköy early, before the heat. Spend about two hours walking through the ruins and the churches.
  • Midday: Continue to Ölüdeniz, a short ride away, and have lunch there.
  • Afternoon: Swim at the Blue Lagoon or Belcekız Beach. Read our Ölüdeniz guide for the best way to split the time. If you want to try paragliding, book it for the morning of another day to leave room for weather delays.
  • Evening: Eat in Ölüdeniz or head back to Fethiye for dinner.

Day 3: Choose your adventure

For the final day, pick the style of trip that suits you.

  • Option A, the boat day: Take the 12 Islands boat tour for swimming stops and lunch on board. This is the most relaxing option.
  • Option B, canyon and ruins: Join a tour or hire a car for Saklıkent Gorge, with a trout lunch and a visit to Tlos. This is the more active option.
  • Option C, Butterfly Valley: A boat from Ölüdeniz to the hidden cove, as in our Butterfly Valley guide.

In the evening, enjoy a final walk along the harbour, and buy any souvenirs you want in the bazaar.

If you have more time

  • Spend an afternoon on Çalış Beach for the sunset, as described in our Çalış guide.
  • Walk a section of the Lycian Way near Ölüdeniz or Faralya.
  • Visit Pinara and the Letoon for deeper Lycian history.

Tips for pacing

  • Do the active things in the morning and rest at midday in summer.
  • Do not book too many tours in a row. One big activity per day is plenty.
  • Keep a spare day for weather, especially for boats and paragliding.
  • Carry water, sun protection and some cash.

Rainy day plan

Rain is uncommon from late spring to early autumn, but possible in spring and autumn. Use the time for the museum, a long lunch, the bazaar and a hammam or a Turkish bath visit. Boat trips and Saklıkent are best avoided during storms.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3 days enough for Fethiye?

Yes for a good first visit. You can see the old town, one major beach, Kayaköy and a boat trip or Saklıkent.

Do I need a car?

Not necessarily. Minibuses and taxis cover the town, Çalış, Kayaköy and Ölüdeniz. For Saklıkent and Tlos a tour or rental car is easier.

Where should I stay?

Fethiye centre for walking and restaurants, Çalış for a quiet seafront stay, and Ölüdeniz for a resort feel.

What is the best day for the market?

Tuesday is the main market day. Ask your hotel to confirm the current location.

What if the weather is bad?

Swap days so that the boat trip and the canyon fall on better weather, and use rain for the museum and bazaar.
