Çalış Beach (Çalış Plajı) is a long strip of coast that curves around the western edge of Fethiye bay, about 5 km from the town centre. It does not have the dramatic lagoon of Ölüdeniz, and it is not trying to. What it offers instead is a flat, easy seafront, a long promenade lined with restaurants, and some of the best sunsets in the area. If you want a calm, practical beach day close to town, this is the place.

What it is like

The beach is mostly pebble with some coarse sand, and it stretches for around 3 km. The sea is generally calm because the bay is sheltered, and it shelves gradually, so it suits families and relaxed swimmers. Behind the beach a pedestrian promenade runs for most of the length, with cafés, bars, small hotels, shops and restaurants. The mountains rise behind the town and the islands of the bay sit across the water, which makes the view in the evening very pretty.

It is busy in July and August, but it rarely feels as crowded as Ölüdeniz. In spring and autumn it is quiet and pleasant, and you will see more locals walking and cycling than tourists.

Getting there from Fethiye

The easiest way is the local minibus (dolmuş) from the central Fethiye bus station. The ride takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic. A taxi is an easy option for such a short distance, so ask the price before you set off. Many visitors also cycle or walk along the seaside road, and in summer there are boat services between Fethiye and Çalış on some schedules. Ask locally about current times, because they change from season to season.

Local tip: A water taxi or small boat from Fethiye harbour is a nice way to arrive in the evening for sunset, then take the minibus back.

Things to do

  • Swim and sunbathe: Sunbeds and umbrellas are available at many beach clubs and hotels, with different prices and rules. Check before you sit down. Public sections of the beach are free.
  • Water sports: Kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and pedalos are common. Windy afternoons in summer make the bay good for windsurfing and kitesurfing, so ask local schools about lessons.
  • Walk the promenade: The long seafront path is flat and shaded in places. It is a pleasant evening walk, and the lights come on along the water at dusk.
  • Watch the sunset: The sun sets behind the mountains on the western side of the bay. Find a table by the water about an hour before sunset.
  • Cycle: You can cycle on the promenade and the cycle path that links Çalış with Fethiye town.

Where to eat

Çalış has a large number of restaurants, from simple family places to seafront terraces. Menus typically include fish, grilled meat, pide, mezes and international dishes. Menus and prices differ between the seafront and the streets behind it, so compare menus before you sit. For fish, ask the price per kilo, as in our Fethiye food guide. A short walk inland often gets you the same quality for less.

When to go

June to September is swimming season. May and October are warm enough for a comfortable day by the sea with fewer people. In July and August the afternoon wind can be strong, which is good for sailors and windsurfers but less pleasant for sunbathers. Winters are quiet, and many beach businesses close, although the promenade remains a good place for a stroll.

Practical tips

  • Wear water shoes, since the pebbles can be hot and uncomfortable.
  • Bring sun protection. Shade is limited on the open beach.
  • Use bottled or filtered water for drinking.
  • Mosquitoes can be a nuisance in the evening in summer. Carry repellent.
  • Check which parts of the beach have lifeguards before you let children swim.

Is Çalış a good place to stay?

For many visitors, yes. It has a wide range of hotels and apartments, a good selection of restaurants and a more peaceful atmosphere than the busiest resorts. It is a bit far from the old town and nightlife in Fethiye centre, but the minibus is easy and frequent. If you want to wake up beside the sea and be on the beach in two minutes, Çalış is one of the most relaxed bases on the coast.
